Job Title: Feedlot Pen Checker
Reports To: Feedlot Foreman
Overview
The Pen Checker is responsible for ensuring early and accurate diagnosis of sick cattle, as well as understanding and following protocols for cattle treatment guaranteeing the highest level of cattle health. Members within this area will also have horsemanship skills required to move sick/injured animals ensuring humane and low stress cattle handling is performed constantly. The Pen Checker will also be required to process incoming animals, assist with routine feedlot maintenance, help ship those animals at finished weights, and keep an updated cattle inventory in hospital’s pens.
Major Responsibilities
- Animal Welfare – Cattle are priority
- Check and treat cattle in the feedlot daily in a safe and timely manner (includes prolapses, abscesses and calving)
- Knowledge of cattle diseases
- Adhere to company policies and procedures
- Follow Veterinarian protocol
- Must be able to ride a horse and good horsemanship skills
- Care for own horses
- Good attitude – Must be a Team Player
- Communicate to Manager any irregularities with cattle (ex. Down cattle)
- Report any broken fences, poor bedding or broken drinkers
- Assist in keeping barn and chutes clean and tidy
- Assist in general labor jobs such as fixing fence and washing equipment
- Take direction from Foreman and help out in any other areas
- Self-Motivated and have good verbal communication skills
Experience / Skills Required
- Possess knowledge of, and ability to, recognize common diseases within cattle in feedlot setting
- Good horsemanship skills
- Self-Motivated
- 2 years of experience working with livestock
- Good attitude – Must be a Team Player
- Must be able to ride a horse
- Must be able to learn on-site
